The TÜV Functional Safety Program is the only worldwide extended vocational training program in the area of Functional Safety where knowledge and competencies are approved of by a third neutral party and where certificates are issued.

TÜV Rheinland has institutionalized this training program in 2004 together with national and international companies and experts of the Functional Safety business. Since today more than 2,300 engineers have participated in trainings regarding topics like Safety Instrumented Systems and Hardware/Software Design and have become TÜV Functional Safety Engineers.

During the last 4 years more than 40 TÜV Functional Safety Experts and 50 members of the Interest Group have supported and enhanced the program with their experience and knowledge and have made it a worldwide success.

All trainers of the program are TÜV Functional Safety Experts and their trainings are offered worldwide. So the TÜV Functional Safety Engineers come from all over the world. No other program can offer trainings in the area of Functional Safety with such a worldwide presence supported by so much expertise.

Functional Safety

The TÜV Functional Safety Program supports engineers (and/or persons in the functional safety business) to deepen their knowledge and their experience in order to achieve a worldwide acknowledged know how and practical experience within the area of functional safety according to the IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 and further relevant international standards.

The TÜV Functional Safety Program offers trainings of different course providers / companies concerning various subjects of functional safety. The focus is mainly on the following subjects:

• Safety Instrumented Systems
• Hardware/Software System Design
• Functional Safety of Machinery

To cover the range of safety aspects the TÜV Functional Safety Program also offers complementary trainings since 2008 referring to the following topics:

• Security Management

Within the TÜV Functional Safety Program two qualifications can be obtained:

• TÜV Functional Safety Engineer
• TÜV Functional Safety Expert

The TÜV Functional Safety Program is accompanied by an Interest Group. The members of this board are employees from companies involved in manufacturing safety-relevant products, integrating safety systems or plant operators. The task of this interest group is to support the development and dissemination of relevant and necessary information in order to support an up to date and international dialogue and therewith support the objectives of the TÜV Functional Safety Program.
