Machinery

General

The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EG defines requirements for machines and plants which are placed on the market. This directive is a revised version of the Machinery Directive, whose first version had been accepted in 1989. This revised version is valid since December 29, 2009 and has to be applied accordingly. The national implementation of the Machinery Directive has taken place by the Equipment and Product Safety Act.

Two different objectives shall be pursued:

1. Harmonization of requirements referring to safety and health protection, to achieve a high level of safety and health protection.

2. Guarantee of free circulation of machines on the EU market.

Relevant Standards

Several harmonized Standards are available which give support to fulfill the requirements of the Machinery Directive.

The requirements and possibilities of Functional Safety application are described in the harmonized standards EN ISO 13849-1/-2 and EN 62061. EN ISO 13849-1/-2 are based on EN 954-1/ISO 13849-2. EN ISO 13849-1 defines Performance Level (PL a to PL e) to classify the safety-related availability.

EN 62061 is the tailored  implementation of IEC/EN 61508 referring to the requirements of machinery and thus classified the safety-related availability in Safety Integrity Levels (SIL 1 to SIL 3).
