TÜV Rheinland offers a time- and cost effective procedure to test and
certify your products for the safety of machinery for the US market
(USA and Canada).
As appropriate authority for the safety of machinery in the US, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) requires certification of components used in plant and machinery acc. to the American product safety standards. Only testing laboratories accredited by OSHA - so called NRTLs (Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory) - can perform these tests and certifications.
TÜV Rheinland of North America (TRNA) is – like UL and further organizations in the US - a NRTL and performs product safety tests and certifications for the US-Market.
History
At the start of its work place safety and health program, the US government, through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), granted a monopoly to Underwriters Laboratories (UL). In 1989, the US program was changed to a competitive model, and the role of NRTL was created. The change came largely in response to pressure from US industry groups whose members had experienced selling products in the European Union. Because of Europe's competitive regulatory market, in the early '80s, it was possible for US manufacturers to introduce their products to the European Market twice as fast as they could introduce them to the US-Market.
TÜV US
Products listed by TÜV Rheinland for the US market are identified by the TÜV US mark. When the Canadian and US certifications are combined to C TUV US clients are able to demonstrate compliance to US and Canadian markets.
For the consumer, the manufacturer, the equipment owner and the AHJ-Inspector, the C TUV US indicates that the equipment has been exposed to rigorous testing and evaluation and is found to comply with relevant standards. In other words, the equipment is found to be safe as per definition of the relevant standard.
Using C TUV US listed equipment means reduced danger of accidents, reduced hazards for the users, reduced liability for the owners and manufacturers and a generally safer world.

The TÜV Rheinland work-flow process reduces test-cycle time and lowers overall costs, and its vast international approvals network gives clients entry to more global markets quicker and more economically.
The C TUV UC mark is widely accepted as the UL/CSA equivalent by retailers, and many manufacturers are turning to TÜV Rheinland for the cost savings, worldwide network and responsive customer service.
Today, more than ever, you need to demonstrate how regulatory compliance adds value to your operations. TÜV Rheinland is your best choice to make this happen.
Key Points of C TUV US Certification
- The C TUV US mark is accredited by OSHA (NRTL) for the US and SCC for Canada.
- The C TUV US mark is recognized as the equivalent and direct replacement to the UL and CSA marks by city, county and state/provincial regulators throughout the US and Canada.
- Safety testing conducted to applicable US and Canadian standards and in most cases can be combined with testing for other global certifications.
Cost- and Time-Saving Advantages of the C TUV US Mark Include
- Only two annual factory inspections with a suitable Quality System in place, not up to four or more, as required by others
- One-stop testing and certification for all of your worldwide certification needs - one test can lead to global compliance.
- Most organizations charge annual fees for their certification/file maintenance. Consolidating your certifications with TÜV Rheinland offers substantial cost savings over the life of a product.
- Existing UL and CSA certifications are convertible to C TUV US certification for minimal cost.
