TÜV Functional Safety Engineer |

The increasing complexity of machines and plants and their possible hazard potential as well as the continuous development in the field of functional safety subject to change of technology and standards require a steady update of knowledge and experience.
Engineers and persons working in the field of Functional Safety - either as product developer or -applicant - can participate in a training of the TÜV Functional Safety Programm and update as well as deepen their knowledge in the following topics:
How to become a TÜV Functional Safety Engineer
Interested persons or engineers should study the trainings and course
offers of the TÜV Functional Safety Program thoroughly. Course
providers as well as TÜV Rheinland can be contacted to get further necessary information and details.
The registration should be made directly to the
course provider. The course provider proves if the eligibility requirements are
met and sends all necessary documents and registration forms to the
applicant.
If a participant wants to get the TÜV FS Engineer certificate continuous participation in the course and successfull participation in the exam are compulsory.
Successful participants will receive the TÜV Functional Safety Engineer certificate issued by TÜV Rheinland. The certificate states knowledge in the
specified topic. Furthermore a TÜV FS Engineer logo including an ID-number and topic of training can be obtained by TÜV Rheinland. This logo may be used by the TÜV FS Engineer on his business card.
The value of TÜV Functional Safety Engineer
The TÜV Functional Safety Engineer certificate as well as the logo confirm that:
- the person has participated continuously in a training of the TÜV Functional Safety Program concerning a specified topic,
- has successfully passed the final exam of this training,
- has obtained specified knowledge, which he can integrate to his daily work,
- has obtained the title "TÜV Functional Safety Engineer" concerning the specified topic within the TÜV Functional Safety Program.
Eligibility requirements
The following requirements have to be met, to participate in a training/course of the TÜV Functional Safety Program and to get the TÜV FS Engineer certificate:

a minimum of 3 to 5 years experience in the field of functional safety.

University degree (Master's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering)
or
Equivalent engineer level responsibilities status certified by employer.
(Persons, who do not have the according business experience may participate in the training as well as the exam. If they pass the exam successfully the TÜV FS Engineer certificate will be issued to them as soon as the necessary 3 years of business experience in the area of functional safety are achieved.)
Validity of TÜV FS Engineer Certificate
The certificate is valid for 5 years.
In order to extend the validity to further 5 years, the TÜV FS Engineer has to send the following documents to TÜV Rheinland:
- an official letter from his employer or from a customer, in which their current and continuous work in the specified area of certification (either SIS, HW/SW or Safety of Machinery) is described and/or confirmed;
- a form sheet filled in with all necessary information describing projects which have been carried out during the last 5 years of his professional life describing his experience in functional safety.
